An evisa is an Electronic Visa, which you will need if you want to enter or travel within India. For a selected list of countries, you no longer have to go through the classic visa process and a quick evisa can be obtained instead. You will find most of the information you need in your passport. Please note in order to get an evisa, you need to use specifically a passport (as opposed to other International Travel Documents). In addition to that, in order to finish the application, you will also need a valid credit or debit card.
Some more points to note:

  • A. For Business evisa – you will also have to upload your business card along with complete details of the Indian Company which you will visit or with which you intend to associate yourself with.
  • B. For Medical evisa – you will also need a copy of the Letter from the Hospital concerned in India. Make sure on its letterhead you will have: the approximate date of admission/treatment in the hospital, the full name, nationality and Passport number of the patient/ e-Medical Visa applicant.
  • C. For Conference evisa – you will need the following:
    • (i) Invitation from organizer (mandatory)
    • (ii) Political clearance from Ministry of External Affairs, Gov of India (mandatory)
    • (iii) Event clearance from Ministry of Home Affairs, Gov of India (optional)

You can use an Indian evisa for tourism purposes, a casual meetup with friends and relatives or attending a short-term variety of programs (yoga, local languages, music, dance, arts, crafts, cooking, medicine, etc). You can also do volunteer work of short duration (up to a month), or get an evisa for medical treatment, Indian medicine, business purpose, be attendant for an e-medical visa holder, or in order to attend a conference, seminar or workshop in India.

Please make sure you select the correct type of evisa, based on your reason for travel.

It usually takes up to 72 hours for an evisa application to be processed. Please remember to apply online with at least 4 days in advance of the date of arrival in India. After approval please make sure you carry with you a printed copy of your evisa on your travels. While digital records are acceptable, it is best to print it out in case your phone signal or battery cause problems at the time of entry.

Persons holding an evisa are allowed to enter India only through one of the selected 28 Airports and 5 Seaports.

Airports approved: Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bagdogra, Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Calicut, Chennai, Chandigarh, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi, Gaya, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Port Blair, Pune, Tiruchirapalli, Trivandrum, Varanasi & Visakhapatnam, and 

Seaports approved: Cochin, Goa, Mangalore, Chennai and Mumbai seaport).

You may depart from any of the Indian Immigration Check Posts (ICPs).

Please keep in mind if you are a National of a country which is affected by Yellow Fever, or you are arriving from one of these countries, you have to bring with you the yellow fever vaccination card.

  • When you enter India you might be asked to show a booked return plane ticket or an onward journey ticket.
  • You might be also asked to offer some proof that you have sufficient money to support your travels in India.
  • Your passport has to be valid for 6 more months, from the date of arrival in India.

Two attendant evisas can be granted alongside one medical evisa for the patient.

  1. You cannot seek employment or get hired in India, while you travel with an evisa.
  2. You should not perform NGO activities or visit India for journalism purposes.
  3. You cannot do long voluntary work or any work that involves any type of monetary payment.
  4. You cannot apply for an evisa with a Diplomatic/Official Passport or Laissez-passer/ international travel documents.

Please note that this is not possible at this time. All family members must have separate evisa applications. Even if your children travel on your passport, they will still need an individual evisa application.
